My name is Sam Karlson. I’m 43 years old and I’m a musician, DJ, producer and Artistic Director at Madame et Yoyo in Paris. I’ve been living my passion for music for 22 years.
Music allows you to open up
to the Universe, to the World,
“I wanted a dynamic, youthful tone that gives strength and energy at all times of the day.”
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
It’s been a very personal journey for me to become an artist and it originates from my childhood. My dad is a guitarist and we were swimming in vinyl’s at home. I’ve always looked for the best way to spread empathy with others. Art was obvious and music remains the universal language of excellence. When I was 4 years old, I realised the power of music to breathe life into it. When I was 8, I started to cut, with scissors and glue, the tapes from my audio cassettes. My first mixes and remixes were created like this.
When I was 20, I was in Master of Letters in Tours. To pay for my rent, I started DJing at night. This is where I learned the technique of mixing and deepened my musical selection. It’s amazing to be out there and see people react in real time to your selections, mixes and flow.
In 1999 I went to Paris and joined the Cour Florent. It was during this period that I met David Guetta at the Bain Douche and it was he who gave me my chance. I haven’t stopped since.
What ‘vibe’ do you feel you bring to Tribe?
It all started with a meeting with the Tribe Collective. We discussed the brand’s philosophy and I immediately agreed. For me, Tribe sets a new benchmark in the hospitality industry. Tribe breaks traditional codes with a mixture of genres that awakens the consciousness of our society. With a mix of hotel and coffee shop, and the ability to meet travellers and locals … this facilitates listening and living together, and an empathy and interest that we can show towards the other. At Tribe we accept gender mixes. This is what I like and what inspires me.
We tend to restrict ourselves too much within the all-night scene. I made a playlist for Tribe which is the complete opposite of a selection formatted in one style. There are of course some cutting-edge tunes and artists but I added some well-known titles that reassure the uninitiated. I wanted a dynamic, youthful tone that gives strength and energy at all times of the day.
A new world is taking place. Music must be part of it and has its role to play. It allows you to open up to the Universe, to the World, to individuals. I have this aspiration for Tribe.
What role does music play in a place like Tribe?
Identities are mixed within the Tribe community. And yet everyone should feel good in the hotel. Everyone should feel reassured, comforted and cocooned. Music plays a key role in creating this atmosphere. Without this sound ‘universe’, there would definitely be a void.
Nietzche wrote that life would be wrong without music. I have a utopian dream and have already tried several projects on this subject. I am convinced that putting music in places where there is none, such as in the Paris metro, would soften manners and make life much more bearable.
Where does your inspiration come from?
The inspiration … is the unique characteristic of each artist. For me, it’s mainly my encounters with people that give me ideas. I met the Tribe Collective at a key point in my life, when my daughter was two and a half years old. It all gave me good vibes. I always need to surround myself with good synergies.
For the creation of a playlist, ideas come to me in my car at night or during my walks in Paris. A place, an atmosphere, a landscape … cinematographic flashes come to mind, film images come back to me. And it all takes me to a chain of tracks that reminds me of those moments.
What projects are you currently working on? Any other collaborations?
I’m currently working on a new album. It will be in the House spirit and with a Disco-House vibe, where the vocals will be dominant. I have both Barbara Tucker and Michelle Wicks as guests, who are true House divas. They’ve already collaborated with big names in the DJ scene like David Guetta and Bob Sinclar.
I want to give it a super good energy, where people find the desire to love again and that they find their faith. All my texts will have positive messages about life.
After confinement, it was an obvious continuation for me to make this album. I’m certainly known as a DJ! But since the ‘Universe of the Night’ is currently closed, it was obvious to me that I had to get into the studio and give 100% to this project.
